Stay Shining! Foods That Can Keep Your Teeth White
June 26, 2024
Teeth whitening is capable of doing incredible things for the look and feel of your smile, capable of brightening your smile by up to eight shades within a single appointment. Moreover, the results last much longer than you might think given the convenience of the procedure; your smile can stay white for somewhere between 6 months and three years afterward.
However, that depends heavily on how well you take care of your teeth. As it turns out, there are some changes you might want to make to your diet in order to keep your smile white. Here are a few examples of foods you may want to eat.
What Foods Can Whiten My Teeth?
You’re probably aware that there are some foods that can discolor your smile, but the inverse is also true. Depending on the foods that you eat, you might be able to preserve the color of your smile for even longer.
For example, some foods can stimulate the production of saliva, which washes away color particles on the surface of the tooth. Cheese is an excellent example, and staying hydrated is important in this regard as well.
Certain foods can also scrub away plaque and stains naturally as you eat, like nuts and carrots. Just be sure to steer clear of foods that could damage your teeth!
And if you’re interested in strengthening your enamel, dairy products like milk and yogurt contain calcium and vitamin D that can support the health of the teeth.
Foods You Might Want to Avoid
Certain foods and beverages can stain and discolor teeth over time. Dark-colored drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and cola are major culprits due to their intense pigments. Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and soda, can also erode enamel, making teeth more susceptible to staining. Additionally, foods with artificial dyes and dark sauces like soy sauce and balsamic vinegar can cause discoloration. Berries, such as blueberries and blackberries, also have strong pigments that can stain teeth. To maintain a brighter smile, it’s helpful to consume these foods in moderation and practice good oral hygiene.
