Can Pregnancy Cause Gum Disease?
January 16, 2025

Pregnancy results in all sorts of changes throughout the body. One change you may not have been expecting is your oral health. It is especially important that you stay on top of your dental hygiene at this time so that you don’t develop pregnancy gingivitis. Continue reading to learn more about the connection between gum disease and pregnancy and what you can do about it.
What Is Pregnancy Gingivitis?
If you are pregnant and have noticed that your gums are irritated and bleeding when you brush, this is likely a sign of pregnancy gingivitis. This condition is more common than you may think. In fact, it affects between 60-75% of pregnant women. This is because pregnancy raises progesterone levels in the body. This makes you more susceptible to developing bacterial plaque that attack the gums. This condition usually develops between the 2nd and 8th months of pregnancy and often peaks during the 3rd trimester. Here are some of the most symptoms.
- Swollen gums
- Tender, puffy gum tissue
- Bleeding gums
- Gum recession
- Halitosis (bad breath)
How to Prevent Pregnancy Gingivitis
While nothing can be done about the hormonal aspects of your gingivitis, there are some steps you can take to prevent the development of hormonal gingivitis:
- Excellent Oral Hygiene: You should brush twice and floss every day. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Take your time and use proper technique. When addressed early, you can reverse the damage and inflammation done to your gums.
- Eat a Healthy Diet: Do your best to enjoy a diet that is rich in balanced, whole foods. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products. Stay away from items that are sugary or starchy.
- Use a Saltwater Rinse: If you notice swelling or bleeding when you brush or floss, try adding a saltwater rinse to your routine. Dilute one teaspoon of salt into one cup of warm water. Swish this mixture around your mouth a few times and spit it out.
- Visit Your Dentist: One of the best ways to prevent pregnancy gingivitis is to see your dentist. You should see your dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups, including during your pregnancy. If your dentist picks up on gum disease, steps can be taken to restore your smile to health.
Pregnancy gingivitis is common but can be prevented with proper care and maintenance. By using the tips listed above and working with your dentist, you can keep your smile healthy as you prepare for the arrival of your baby.
